Application #5 Part 2

Mitchell’s analysis of the time period where Napoleon took over France brings together historical and societal context for Marxist theory. By turning Black women into a cultural commodity Napoleon was able to write off an entire community of people, which eventually led to his downfall. I find Mitchell’s argument to be particularly interesting as it brings together historical context and literary theory. With prior theorists, we didn’t see so much as a historical component as it was solely analyzing one piece of literature. Since Mitchell describes each experimental procedure done on these women, it paints a picture that isn’t described in any history book. I am ashamed to say that I did not know about Sarah Baartmann and her sacrifices/forced labor and exploitation by Georges Cuvier before we read “The Venus Hottentot”. I don’t find myself resisting Mitchell’s analysis anywhere. I think I agree with her thought process and thoroughly enjoy the steps she takes to break down historical events and apply them to Marxist theory. I would further Mitchell’s theories by talking specifically about why the event in question (Napoleon’s rise to power) was able to occur due to the way capitalism was running the world at the time, and still is today. It would be interesting to see what would have happened if the Marxist revolution happened within that time frame and how it would have affected the experiments being done on these women.
