Learning Outcome #3
Outcome 3 (Active Reading) – Employ techniques of active reading, critical reading, and informal reading response for inquiry, learning, and thinking. (Word Count: 266 words)
My styles of annotations have stayed the same through the semester. I mostly focused on questioning annotations as I want more info about certain things. For example, when I was reading “The Other Problematic Outbreak” I wanted to know more about how a lawmaker would think.

I annotated this article with the idea of wondering how others can create laws based on xenophobic thoughts. I also annotated in the questioning way in order to hold our political leaders accountable. (insert other image here). I wanted to understand how there isn’t an uprising against political leaders who promote racist/xenophobic ideologies.
As for my reading responses, my questioning annotations helped me focus on specific aspects of our reading response questions. For example, in my Cadogan reading response, I focused on finding unique challenges that Cadogan faced within my annotations.

In my Cadogan response, I focused on answering the questions that I had. My biggest question had to do with how Cadogan had lived his life. I wanted to read about his experience as they were interesting pieces of the larger puzzle that is life. My annotations also helped me find the quotes I needed in order to back up my thinking. The idea of perception also made it into my final essay.

My final essay held the idea presented in my Cadogan reading response, that race affects the way someone is treated in the world. I used the experiences presented in my reading response in order to back up my claims in the final draft of my essay. If I hadn’t annotated the readings with my questions, I don’t think that I would have had as strong of a claim or a final essay for that matter.
